　　1、shy

　　害羞的，羞怯的

　　英语释义：nervous and uncomfortable with other people

　　Children are often shy of/with people they don't know.

　　孩子们和不认识的人在一起时常常会害羞。

　　Music drew the shy girl out of her shell.

　　音乐吸引那个害羞的姑娘走出了深闺。

　　【小知识】

　　害羞;沉默;不与人交往

　　2、bashful

　　害羞的，羞怯的

　　英语释义：often feeling uncomfortable with other people and easily embarrassed

　　She gave a bashful smile as he complimented her on her work.

　　当他恭维她的工作成果时，她腼腆地笑了笑。

　　3、retiring

　　腼腆的;不爱交际的

　　英语释义：unwilling to be noticed or to be with other people

　　Joanna had a gentle retiring disposition.

　　乔安娜性格温柔而腼腆。

　　He is a very quiet and retiring person.

　　他是一位沉默寡言不爱交际的人。

　　4、coy

　　(尤指女性)害羞的，腼腆的，忸怩作态的

　　英语释义：(especially of women) being or pretending to be shy, or like a child

　　She gave me a coy look from under her schoolgirl's fringe.

　　她透过她那学生式的刘海羞答答地瞥了我一眼。

　　Coy girls often like to play cat and mouse with boys.

　　害羞的女孩时常令男孩子捉摸不定。

　　5、timid

　　羞怯的;胆小的，胆怯的

　　英语释义：shy and nervous; without much confidence; easily frightened

　　Kieran is a timid child.

　　露西是个非常羞怯的孩子。

　　6、sheepish

　　羞怯的;局促不安的;驯服的;胆怯的

　　She had a rather sheepish smile.

　　她笑起来很害羞的样子。

　　【小知识】

　　sheep指的是“绵羊”，含有褒义，可以指害羞而忸怩的人。而goat就常含有贬义，比如act the goat是干蠢事，old goat是老色鬼。

　　就像是那个经典的习语：separate the sheep from the goats(分出优劣)。

　　7、shamefaced

　　害羞的;惭愧的

　　英语释义：awkward and embarrassed or ashamed

　　Do not be so shamefaced. You'll do it very well.

　　别那么脸皮薄，你会做得很好的。

　　He looked somewhat shamefaced when he realized his mistake.

　　他认识到自己的错误后，看上去有些惭愧。

　　【小知识】

　　容易混淆的“shame”同根词：

　　①shameful可耻的，丢脸的

　　I couldn't see anything shameful in what I had done.

　　我认为我没做什么丢脸的事。

　　②ashamed羞耻的，羞愧的;不好意思的，难为情的

　　You've got nothing to be ashamed of.

　　你没有什么可感到内疚的。

　　③shameless无耻的，不要脸的

　　She is completely shameless about her ambition.

　　她对自己的野心全然不知羞耻。

　　8、blushing

　　脸红的

　　From a merry child, then a blushing maid, she has become a perfect woman now.

　　从一个天真烂漫的孩子，到一个腼腆害羞的姑娘，她现在已长成一个姿容出众的女子。

　　我想大家都知道，blush可以做名词和动词，表示“脸红”。很多时候我们脸红，其实也是因为“害羞”嘛。

　　I blush to think of what a fool I made of myself.

　　一想到我出了那么大洋相我就脸红。
